Dragon Writing Challenge

Tl;dr: I'm looking for short writing prompts about dragons. Feel free to post one in the comments.

Here's how this will work:

You, whoever you are that is reading this, can, if you so desire, post a comment on this journal entry in which you will offer up a basic description of a dragon character - somewhere between a couple of sentences and a short paragraph. You can include a physical description, abilities, name, personality, hobbies and interests, setting, situation (if kept reasonably vague,) brief mention of supporting characters, or anything else you think might be interesting. Dragons can be eastern or western, traditional or unusual, calm or ferocious, reclusive or sociable, whatever you can think of that still arguably qualifies as a dragon.

Example:Collapse )

You should NOT attempt to describe a previously existing character, for the broadest possible definition of "character". Not a published character, nor your own character or draconic persona, nor anything else like that.  Make something up. The only exception is if you're describing some kind of existing archetype - for instance, "A guardian dragon," or "A princess-kidnapping dragon who is being attacked by a knight." In fact, I encourage that sort of thing. I think it would be interesting to address a bunch of those draconic archetypes. (Well, maybe not the princess-kidnapping one. That's kind of straddling the line between "archetype" and "annoying cliche." Even the parodies of that scenario have been done to death.)

I will take the comments I get and write short pieces of fiction about those dragons - maybe a page or so. I'll make up my own plot and so forth, so expect me to deviate wildly from whatever you had in mind. I have a vague notion that I'm going to do one a day or something - thus "Challenge" - but I'm pretty busy these days, so we'll see what happens. In any case, I'll try to let you know about it if/when I use your description, whoever you are, if I can figure out how to contact you.

Finally, this account isn't exactly a bustling social hub, so if you think this sounds neat, feel free to spread the word. I'm not expecting a lot of responses (or necessarily any) but I'd love to be pleasantly surprised. The more the merrier! Complete strangers are welcome. And if this post has been sitting untouched for months, or even years, go ahead and throw in a comment anyway. Who knows, I might see it.

It's gonna be fantasy.
That's all I'm going to say about it for now.

Writer's Block: How old is too old?
Color Doodle

Are you ever too old to go trick-or-treating? Is candy for everyone?

My impression from skimming the answers so far is that everybody would like to go trick or treating, no matter how old they are. Even the people who claim that there is a "too old" say they wish they could do it.
So what has age got to do with anything in the first place? That's what I'd really like to know. Where did people first get the idea into their heads that one could be too old to celebrate this holiday? Why do we think this question is even worth asking? Why do we not just assume that everybody can go? Nobody thinks that you can get too old for Christmas presents, do they?

If I were less lazy, I'd do some research and figure out what ages have been acceptable for trick or treating throughout the holiday's history and come up with a proper answer. I think mostly what stops people from participating is fear of social ridicule, and I bet this whole "too old" nonsense could be destroyed entirely if enough adults just went anyway, demonstrating that it's something they can still do. But that doesn't explain where the notion comes from in the first place.

I stopped going at the age of about 18 because I got braces to correct a jaw problem, and therefore couldn't eat candy. I haven't been since then, and it's probably high time I changed that. I can't go this year, since I'm in Australia and they don't celebrate it, but maybe next year I'll put my candy where my mouth is and return to the streets.

I should probably justify the existence of this account by doing something with it, but I have no idea what.
I mean, I just don't get the urge to share random things about my life with the Internet, and I have other outlets for presenting my creative writing. So what does that leave?
It would be different if I had more social contacts on LJ. I mean, I guess it would just be the difference between having nothing in particular to say for a probable audience of a couple of people, and having nothing in particular to say to a probable audience of a handful of people. But at least my Friends Page wouldn't look so empty.

Eh. We'll see.

Robot Relationship

He stood just four feet tall, and managed nevertheless to be as intimidating as a towering behemoth. Perhaps it was the glowing red eyes that did it, or the sleek metallic carapace, or perhaps it was the fact that he had a rocket launcher built into his belly.
Or perhaps it was merely that I knew that my girl was making eyes at him, and that our relationship had been a bit sour lately, and that despite his shortness, I knew I could never be half the man he was.Collapse )

I wrote this a while ago, but I've just decided that it's worth sharing here. Just an idea that struck me one night.

Untitled fiction thing

White owls lurked in the snow, and Ielgar knew it, so when the innkeeper threatened to throw him out, he resolved to behave. He put his mug down and glared back and forth at the empty barstools that extended on either side of him. His long ears twitched.

Just a little thing I wrote a few months ago and just now expanded upon. Don't judge it too harshly, it hasn't gotten much revision.

This old thing?

Looks like I'm dusting off this old LJ account and putting it to use again.
We'll see what I actually end up doing with it. Maybe nothing after all.

A smile slowly appeared - but with no cat attached.

I've been hit on the head with the hammer of a mischievious muse, and furthermore it has happened while I was on LJ. So, here at last is a proper post. I wrote this based on the line that starts it. That line comes from a list I made during school last year. The rest is off the top of my head, and unrevised.

I'll have to write a sequel someday, I suppose. At least now I have a proper entry.
If I'm extremely lucky, someone might actually read this.
I'll fix the typos later. I don't have the patience right now. They're pretty minor, anyway.

I still have no idea what I'm going to use this LJ for, but I was sick of it being entirely blank.
So here's a post. Yarr.
